How Much Temporary Disability Payments Can I Receive While Recovering From My Injuries?
How Much Compensation Can You Receive If You're Unable to Work After a Job Injury in California?
If you’ve been injured at work in California and can’t return to your job, you may be entitled to Temporary Total Disability (TTD) benefits. These payments are designed to partially replace your lost wages while you recover.
What Are Temporary Total Disability (TTD) Benefits?
Under California Labor Code Section 4654, if a physician determines that you are temporarily unable to work due to a work-related injury, you may qualify to receive two-thirds (2/3) of your average weekly earnings, tax-free. To receive these benefits, you’ll need a valid work status report from either:
Your Primary Treating Physician (PTP)
Or a Panel Qualified Medical Evaluator (PQME), who acts as a neutral doctor in disputed cases
Your PTP or PQME must certify you are currently unable to work.
How Long Do TTD Payments Last?
Most injured workers can receive TTD benefits for up to 104 weeks (2 years). However, certain serious conditions—such as amputations, severe burns, or chronic lung disease—may extend eligibility for benefits up to 240 weeks within a five-year period from the date of injury.
Are There Payment Limits?
Yes. TTD payments are subject to annual minimum and maximum rates set by the state, based on average statewide wages. That means your weekly benefit amount may be capped depending on how much you earned before your injury.
